Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts both traditional and non-traditional, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking, clinching, and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground.
Modern mixed martial arts competition emerged in American popular culture in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Initially based on finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors of various arts were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety. In the following decade, MMA promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport.
Here at Seacoast MMA/BJJ we offer Basic MMA for those looking to learn and integrate the various techniques used in MMA and Advanced MMA for those looking to take their training to the next level in terms of fitness and applied technique. A student need not compete in MMA to take part in the advanced class but will be prepared to do so in the Advanced class.
Equipment needed for both Beginner and Advanced MMA classes:
mma gloves, boxing gloves, cup, mouth piece, shin guards.
Optional equipment: Ear guards, head gear, hand wraps.
